Additional information

Soft tissue, such as the inter-vertebral disc, is a two phase material (solid and fluid) that experiences large deformations and fluid pressurization under mechanical loading. The 3D-predictive modelling of soft tissue is a major challenge in bio-medical engineering. This paper tackles a major problem of numerical instabilities leading to non-physical oscillations. This research was presented at the annual UK Association of Computational Mechanics in Engineering meeting (April 2012) and subsequently this significantly enhanced manuscript was an invited submission to this special issue.
