Additional information

This paper reports a novel approach to compact atomic traps as a source of cold atoms. These traps are vital for the future application of cold atoms to quantum metrology and quantum information processing since they will enable the production of cold atoms outside the laboratory, for example in space where they can be used to increase the accuracy of the atomic clocks employed in global positioning systems (GPS). The paper is the result of an extensive collaboration with Imperial College, University of Strathclyde and the National Physical Laboratory, and was funded by the European Space Agency.
