Additional information

Multi-scale techniques predict the macroscopic response of physical systems by simulating processes at scales which are orders of magnitude smaller. This manuscript develops the first energy-conserving algorithm for the simultaneous use of finite element methods and atomistic simulations on different sub-domains. The research was carried out with INSA Lyon (Contact: alain.combescure@insa-lyon.fr) and was sponsored by the French Defense Agency for Basic Research and CNRS through a senior research professorship to de Borst. The research also contributed to de Borst's degree of Officier dans l'Ordre National du Mérite, awarded by the French President.
