Distributed situational awareness in an airborne warning and control system: application of novel ergonomics methodology
Research was undertaken as part of the Human Factors Integration Defence Technology Centre, a multi-million pound industry/academia consortium (including Lockheed-Martin; BAE Systems and Cranfield University) funded by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (contact: Colin Corbridge; CCORBRIDGE@dstl.gov.uk). The theory developed in this and other papers is widely accepted as a valid approach for assessing Situation Awareness in command and control and has been further explored in a variety of further applications (Type 42 Destroyer; Emergency Services; Utilities – National Grid). It adopts a unique, multi-agent, multiple perspective to Situation Assessment. The consortium was awarded the Ergonomics Society President’s Medal in 2008.
