Double-weighted statement

Foot’s biography of Æthelstan (the first ever full-length account of his life and reign) required engagement with a complex range of sources, presenting particular interpretative problems. The reign is ill-served in contemporary narratives and serious doubt has been cast on the authenticity of the only substantial later medieval account. Conventional biography proving impossible, Foot devised a method placing the person of the king at the centre of the different environments in which he lived, using charters, coins, law-codes, poems and his manuscript- and relic-collections to flesh out the sparse narrative record. The project took 7 years, one taken as leave.
