Additional information

Many cardiac arrhythmias, with the exception of atrial fibrillation, are characterised by signature patterns of intracardiac electrical activation. This study was ambitious in its attempt to associate particular electrical signatures recorded during AF with arrhythmia termination, therefore implicating certain electrogram patterns in arrhythmia perpetuation. It provided a novel insight into the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation and supported the therapeutic concept that localised electrical abnormalities could be recognised and eliminated using simple criteria which were widely applicable. More advanced mapping techniques have since built on this idea that persistent AF can be terminated by focal RF application.
