Additional information

It was long believed that coupled van der Pol oscillators exhibit chaotic behaviour with suitable coupling. Using electronic circuits as well as numerical studies, this paper showed that this was not the case in a stable system. Furthermore, this was also the first paper to report experiments showing different nonlinear behaviours of coupled van der Pol systems at the boundary of their stable operating regimes. The techniques reported are now being used to fabricate compact sources for terahertz radiation through an EPSRC grant (EP/J019747/1, £580k).
