Additional information

This was the first step of the new weighted-enrichment function based approach to discretisation of complex heterogeneous domains with multiple evolving discontinuities resulting from strain localisation and fracture. Despite this first publication only addressing the fracture of linear-elastic-isotropic materials, the potential of this approach was immediately recognised by both the government (TSB, DTRA) and industrial (Rolls-Royce, Mitsubishi-Heavy-Industries) sponsors internationally, resulting in funding for long term research projects (cumulatively approaching £1M), within just one year. This was accompanied by several invitations to deliver keynote lectures and seminars, as well as to take part in sponsored workshops on the topic.
