Additional information

This paper has demonstrated a potential role that glial cells may play in neuronal computation. The mechanism elucidated shows that glia are capable of determining the long-term average firing activity of neighbouring neurons. This important result will ultimately contribute to an understanding of memory and homeostasis phenomena in the healthy and diseased brain.
