Channel Models and Detectors for Two-Dimensional Magnetic Recording
<15> Disk drives are modelled as digital communication systems where the magnetic storage is the physical layer, but the noise originating in the magnetic processes has had to be approximated to white Gaussian because realistic models of the stochastic magnetic processes were intractable within a full channel model. This paper is significant because it describes a grain flipping probability model that is suitable for channel modelling but embodies the nature of real magnetic data recording systems. It was developed in collaboration with the Data Storage Institute, Singapore and has been used to demonstrate the viability of new technologies.
