Intermittent counter-current extraction—Effect of the key operating parameters on selectivity and throughput
Intermittent Counter-current Extraction (ICcE), a novel liquid-liquid extraction process, was demonstrated for the first time resulting in continuous processing using counter-current chromatography instruments being a key part of the TSB High Value Manufacturing research programme on “Scalable Technology for the Extraction of Pharmaceuticals” Grant No. TP14/HVM/6/I/BD506K. One major outcome of this grant was a 1.6X reduction in solvent usage and therefore reduced cost when using ICcE for the clean-up of a pharmaceutical API waste streams compared to conventional chromatography. This latter research won the poster prize at the Symposium on Preparative and Industrial Chromatography and Allied Techniques SPICA2012.
