Additional information

Nitrogen is highly soluble and a common impurity in diamond. Previously it was known to be ineffective as a donor, but we showed it unexpectedly acts as an acceptor, adversely affecting the formation of n-type material via phosphorous doping. To prove the connection between the impurity and the acceptor characteristics, we exploited the novel stress-response calculations. The importance of quantitative accuracy is highlighted in the subsequent collaboration with experiment (Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, FOM Institute AMOLF and DeBeers) in the role of substitutional N as an acceptor [Phys. Rev. B 84, art.no. 165202 (2011)].
