Obafemi Awolowo and the Making of Remo : The Local Politics of a Nigerian Nationlist
The fieldwork for this book was carried out between 1996 and 2006 in Ijebu-Remo, a rural area of Nigeria. The book’s argument was contingent on sources which were difficult and time-consuming to access. First, the erratic availability of electricity, water and fuel limited working hours and productivity substantially. Second, formal and informal access to local leaders had to be built up over time, sometimes over many years. Third, most relevant documents published after 1960 were held privately and could only be obtained after extensive negotiation. Fourth, most standard translations of local (non-standard) Yoruba texts needed to be verified and corrected.
