This paper is one of the first to apply methodology of computational neuroscience to a scientific theory of consciousness (global workspace theory). The paper is cited in the Blackwell Companion to Consciousness and the Scholarpedia article on Models of Consciousness, and is discussed at length in a review paper on map-based neuron models (Ibarz, et al. Physics Reports 501, 1-74). It has lead to a further journal publication by the author not included in the REF submission (Connor & Shanahan, Neural Networks 23, 1139-1154), and to a prize-winning game-playing agent featured in a New Scientist article (8th September 2012).
