This output represents ten years of research (1999 – 2009). It was based both on eight years of field studies in 26 churches in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and also on a complex range of interdisciplinary analyses. The study demanded testing the emerging data against existing methods and theories in international reconciliation studies, post-colonial studies and sociology, as well as theology and ritual studies. Its findings offered insights that could not have arisen from a less complex or single-disciplinary study, nor from one without the extensive fieldwork component.
