Additional information

The donation of a man’s satin doublet (c1620) to the Perth Museum initiated a Heritage Lottery funded programme of research and conservation, resulting in an interactive exhibition and educational outreach. The project won the United Kingdom Award for Conservation. Wilcox initiated and edited this essay about the project, co authored with four others: a cultural historian, a dress historian, a conservator, and a facsimile-maker. His own contribution included analysis of the garment’s cut and construction and its relationship to other early 17th century examples. The paper attempts to convey the complexity of responses that historic garments can generate.
