Die Zwei in der Drei, oder : Ein Zwilling kommt selten allein
This paper explores the numerical composition of multi-piece weapon depositions in the European Bronze Age. The number of similar pieces deposited jointly as part of a closed assemblage is tracked across Europe, the individual depositions are assigned to one of seven chronological phases, and the emerging patterns are tested for diachronic trends. Two distinct principles emerge that seem to have governed most depositional practice in terms of numerical composition: dualistic and trinitarian. On a number of occasions, deliberate attempts seem to have been made to reconcile these two principles by the individuals or communities involved in the relevant practice.
