English abstract

Understanding the Christian communities in Palestine under the British Mandate is important to understanding the religious and political dynamics which brought colonial power into contact and conflict with the two nationalist forces of the Zionist movement and Arab Palestinian nationalism. The Christians, although only 10% of the Arab population, played an important role making a distinctive contribution to economic and political society. This paper undertakes a wide-ranging enquiry, drawing on a range of sources, into how the Christian communities were configured during this period, their educational and cultural position in society, demography, and legal status.
