Murphy pulls together evidence from a wide chronological span covering the whole of the high imperial era. He draws on thirty years of research in the Ottoman archives to present a complex interpretation of Ottoman political institutions over the longue durée. The books couples a broad chronological scope with detailed empirical evidence gathered during the course of a lifetime of archival research to capture some of the abiding qualities and philosophical foundations that governed Ottoman political life throughout its 700 year existence for the benefit of both specialists and comparativists with an interest in early-modern empires.
