‘Transforming 1916’ collects and analyses a considerable body of material in assessing arguably the most significant commemorative event in Irish history. Professor Diarmaid Ferriter wrote ‘The author has mined both archival sources and published material very comprehensively to give a multi-layered account of 1966 that challenges some myths and underlines the degree of tension in an event that has been overly simplified as one dimensional and triumphalist’. Its ‘innovative use of theory’ was recognized by the American Conference for Irish Studies which awarded ‘Transforming 1916’ the prize for the best history or social science book of 2012.
