LXZ-1: This paper proposes a flexible pilot-aided carrier frequency synchronization algorithm for orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) uplinks. This provides a practical solution to address a critical problem in OFDMA – the different carrier offsets arising from different users. The interest in this research from BT (santosh.2.kawade@bt.com) led to a 10-week internship in 2010 for a Leeds PhD student to develop efficient techniques for synchronizing femtocells. The research also initiated a long-term collaboration with the University of Pisa (michele.morelli@iet.unipi.it), which has led to significant further developments in this field (see, for example, LXZ-2).
