Photoluminescent semiconductor quantum dots have significant potential for medical imaging (see EPSRC grant EP/H008578/1). Currently, most dots contain cadmium but its health and environmental risks will limit exploitation. This collaboration with Leeds physicists presents heavy-metal-free dots and a new method to measure concentration in solution (regarded as ‘very important’ by Zhong, Bai and Zou, Phys Chem Lett, 2012, 3, 3167). We are exploring translation to a clinical setting in a (BHRC funded) collaboration with colorectal cancer clinicians at Leeds; targetted dots can be used to identify tumour margins for precise surgical resection.
