Additional information

Although over 1000 papers have been published so far on HCCI technology, only very few have investigated combustion in multi-cylinder engines. This paper reports the author’s work on the world‘s first prototype V6 HCCI engine produced by industry. It examines challenging issues arising when the technology is applied to a V-type engine. These are associated with bank-to-bank and cylinder-to-cylinder variations in combustion and emissions due to the sensitivity of HCCI to the in-cylinder charge temperature. The research has answered many questions from industry about the practicality of HCCI engine production (JLR/Ford, Steve Richardson, Manager, email:srichar5@jaguarlandrover.com ).
