Being and Becoming Kachin: Histories beyond the State in the South, Southeast and East Asian Borderworlds of Burma
Research was undertaken during 1996-2011, including a three year study of an endangered ritual language in Burma conducted in very challenging conditions (1996-9). Work on two large RCUK funded research projects provided higher training in material and visual anthropology to strengthen the critical analysis of non-textual sources (2003-4; 2004-7). The multi-sited research framework necessitated extensive travel in border regions of Burma, Thailand, India and China. These areas were also conflict zones and/or politically highly sensitive and difficult to access. Conducting the research, therefore, required relationship building with a number of armed groups and their civil networks over an extended period.
