'The song's the thing': capturing the 'sung' to make it 'song'
"This is the opening chapter in the edited collection, 'Gestures of Music Theater: the Performativity of Song and Dance', edited by Dominic Symonds and Millie Taylor. The book stems from discussions of the music theatre working group of the International Federation for Theatre Research, initially from the stimulus of exploring 'Song and Dance'. As a result of early discussions in Munich (2010), a framework for curating this collection was established and the theme of song and dance being performative gestures was confirmed. The collection contains seventeen chapters from diverse contributors, including both editors (in the opening and closing chapters). Between chapters, an ongoing commentary on performativity written by the editors seves to contextualise the developing discussion and introduce discrete sections on 'Singing the Dance, Dancing the Song', 'Performativity as Dramaturgy', 'Performativity as Transition', 'Performativity as Identity', 'Performativity as Context', 'Performativity as Practice', 'Performativity as Community', and 'Performativity as Writing'."
