Additional information

Land-mine detection is an extremely important humanitarian task for many countries in a post-war era. It has been estimated that it would take a thousand years to clear all the mines on Earth at current rate (http://www.un.org/depts/dha/mct/facts.htm). This paper reports a new technique for buried object identification using frequencies from 1.5GHz to 20GHz. Its effectiveness has a significant impact in finding a better way for humanitarian de-mining. The work has also led to further technology development with the support of Sir Bobby Charlton's charity (http://www.findabetterway.org.uk/, contact details available; see also http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/news/display/?id=8249).
