A new scheme for the seismic retrofit of multi-span simply supported bridges
The problem of bridge retrofitting is faced by adopting a novel “reduction of actions” strategy, as opposed to the conventional costly strengthening of the existing substructures. An unconventional external restraining system, consisting of steel piles driven in the embankment, restrains deck displacements and hence reduces the loading of the existing bearings, piers and foundations. The design of the restraining system was optimised against lateral actions and its efficiency was assessed through an existing deficient bridge. The approach can be used in rapid and cost-effective bridge retrofitting schemes for minimising material waste and traffic disruption.
