Three-dimensional modelling of the human carotid artery using the lattice Boltzmann method: II. shear analysis
This paper deals with wall shear stress (WSS) in the carotid artery at the region of the bifurcation. WSS is known to be an important factor in the process of plaque rupture which can ultimately lead to stroke and/or death. Detailed results of the WSS around the bifurcation are obtained directly from the simulation, without the usual requirement to evaluate additional velocity gradients. The analysis revealed, for the first time, that the shear force on the wall of the initial sections of the internal and external carotid arteries is predominantly influenced by the artery geometry prior to bifurcation.
