Additional information

Post-disaster field investigations are an essential component for improving our understanding of disaster prevention. The 2011 Great Eastern Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami was an exceptionally devastating episodic coastal hazard. The data collected after such an event is extremely useful for decision makers, government bodies and practicing coastal engineers. In this respect, the authors have proposed a classification of tsunamis and evacuation areas, which has not been recognised in Japan before. This enables residents in such areas to prioritise the different disaster prevention options available.
