It is vital to consistently prepare drugs materials with the critical quality attributes which are essential for the safety, efficacy and processability of the downstream formulated product. Surface templates, prepared electrochemically on gold substrates, have been used to direct and control the nucleation of mono-dispersed, equant and highly perfect crystals of a drug compound (entacapone) it its most stable polymorphic form in an agitated batch reactor at a representative process R&D processing scale size. The work has attracted industry sponsored research from Teva Pharmaceuticals (Ana.Kwokal@pliva.com) and now forms part of an EPSRC Critical Mass project (Grant EP/I014446/1).
