English abstract

This article discusses a number of questions relative to Donizetti’s opera Il furioso all’isola di Santo Domingo (1833) – its genre, themes, vocal styles, musico-dramatic forms, reception, and relationship with sources in literature, drama and opera. In particular, its relationship to a German play of 1790 provides the starting point for a comparative survey of the treatment of the theme of forgiveness in drama and opera of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The principal conclusion is that Donizetti’s Furioso represents a very recent thematic trend for its time – a harbinger of future developments in opera.
