English abstract

Historians have paid little attention to the question of how the laws governing market behaviour were actually enforced. On the one hand, historians of crime have tended to focus on violent crimes like murder or rape, neglecting mundane offences related to economic behaviour. On the other hand, economic historians have tended to take market regulations at face value, rather than examining how they were used in practice. This paper examines the policing of markets in early modern Venice, using evidence from guild accounts and prosecution records to reconsider the practice and function of policing the market.
