Double-weighted statement

This book is the middle volume of a trilogy dealing with politically motivated prisoners in Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland, from 1848 to 2000. It runs to 1145 pages, some 660,000 words in nineteen chapters, and has taken a decade to research, complete and bring to publication.

The work involved exhaustive archive and special collection research in several jurisdictions, as well as extensive interviewing. Themes include the use of imprisonment by paramilitary organisations, intra-Irish and Anglo-Irish relations, the prison in nationalist identity, prison regimes and law and the morphology of revolutionary groups.
