English abstract

A study of the Sasaeng kwisin ch’aek (“Treatise on Death and Life, Ghosts and Spirits”), Suyo ch’aek (“Treatise on Long Life and Early Death”) and Sinson ch’aek (“Treatise on Immortals”) by Choson scholar Yi I [Yulgok] (1536–1584) provides intriguing insights into the orthodox Neo-Confucian understanding of longevity and immortality. In his disquisitions, written in Classical Chinese, Yulgok delineates the issues in the light of his i-ki-doctrine. The paper discusses the Neo-Confucian rationale behind the issue of longevity and elucidates Yulgok’s view on reasonable life-extending practices and his critique of the Daoist concept of immortality.
