Additional information

This paper defines a new and general approach to the tailoring of combined longitudinal-torsional behaviour in transducers for power ultrasonics applications, permitting scalable transducer design. The work underpinned EPSRC grant (EP/K020013/1, £0.9M) to deliver small, ultrasonically actuated needles for penetrating bone, and led to an EU FP7 grant (EUFP7 UPCD/607015 - €2.5M) to design a larger device (an ultrasonic planetary core drill) led by University of Glasgow with three industrial partners; SSF (Contact: matti.anttila@ssf.fi), Lidax (Contact: jesus.aivar@lidax.com) and Magna Parva (Contact: andy.bowyer@magnaparva.com).
