Additional information

This paper informs new developments in underwater acoustics. A new approach for localising multiple targets emitting acoustic signals underwater is proposed using sparsity-based matched field processing. High accuracy of localisation and the capability of detecting several targets simultaneously are demonstrated on the detection and localisation of real targets in sea experiments (data obtained in SWellEx-96 experiments by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA). Subsequent studies are underway through a funded PhD student.
