Gradient collagen/nanohydroxyapatite composite scaffold: Development and characterization
A collagen, nano-HA composite with a Ca-rich and depleted side, has been constructed using biomimetic diffusion–precipitate method. This precipitates HA in the interior of the collagen to form a compositional and structural gradient composite by control of precipitation. TEM and XRD show the formation of needle-like prism-shaped nano-HA crystallites. The pore size of the composites are controllable by adjusting collagen concentration and freezing rate. The composite scaffold may be used as a tissue engineered scaffold for regions of tissues that are attached to each other with different structural stiffness and cell composition such as a bone tendon junction.
