Hyaluronan hydration generates three-dimensional meso-scale structure in engineered collagen tissues.
This paper reports swelling of plastically compressed collagen living tissue models with hyaluronan. This has major implications for (i) the process technology; (ii) controlling/understanding the plastic-elastic transition behaviour of natural matrix; (iii) suggesting cell-molecular-mechanical mechanisms which may under-lie a serious ocular pathology; (iv) new mechanisms drug delivery and (v) how normal tissue structure could be produced by cells (ie. possible tissue developmental mechanisms). For this reason we published in a leading general, cross-discipline (Royal Soc) journal. This paper has lead to the development of a patent application.
