Additional information

This seminal paper kick-started the field of quantitative photoacoustic tomography (qPAT). qPAT is a nonlinear, ill-posed, inverse problem whose solution would add a powerful spectroscopic dimension to conventional PAT. This paper was the first to demonstrate (a) there is an absorption-scattering non-uniqueness to overcome for optical coefficients to be extracted from PAT images, (b) that multiwavelength images can be used to remove the non-uniqueness and (c) a minimisation approach is a feasible way to solve the qPAT problem. Since this paper, the field of qPAT has grown rapidly and this paper has been highly cited (60 times, 5/6/13 Google Scholar).
