We have developed a novel photoacoustic imaging instrument and used it to visualise the development of the vasculature of a tumour and its response to a new cancer drug. We show the first label-free photoacoustic images of the evolution of the vasculature of a whole tumour and its subsequent drug-induced destruction completely non invasively to depths of up to 10mm for the first time. The paper has excited significant international interest. It was featured on the front cover of the Journal of Biomedical Optics and has been the subject of several press articles (eg Laser Focus World, BioOptics World).
