Additional information

Prior to this work, the selection of wavelengths for optical imaging of functional activity in the human cortex was based on the availability of common diode sources and ad hoc empirical evidence. This model-based study provides solid theoretical justification for specific combinations of up to four wavelengths. Results have informed the design of imaging systems developed by my group, including several devices built by our start-up company and sold to other research groups in the UK and Europe, as well as systems developed elsewhere. I am the head of group and the first author is my PhD student.
