The conference paper was largely analysis of empirical data, whilst the journal article develops a new conceptual framework, including substantive theory (Figure 4) not present in the conference paper. The rewritten abstract (p291) reflects the new focus on theorising social enterprise as a heterogeneous business movement; the revised introduction incorporates a greater breadth of literature (p296-298),justifying social enterprise theory based on hybridity; the main argument now focuses on the plurality of interests represented in 'socially rational' enterprises (pp299-306) and the revised conclusion (pp306-307) argues that social rationality provides another way to understand the legitimacy of management practices in social enterprises.
