Thinking America : New England Intellectuals and the Varieties of American Identity
The request for double-weighting this monograph lies in the complexity of its argument and range of its research. The book explores the complex history of the intellectual in nineteenth-century New England. Eight years in preparation, it investigates far-reaching arguments about the validity of intellectual work, debates around cosmopolitanism and patriotism, and questions of institutional affiliation. It is based on substantial original research across a very extensive range of texts: letters, lectures, journalism and philosophical essays, as well as fiction, and unpublished archival material on Fuller and Emerson from papers held in the Houghton Library at Harvard.
