Characterisation of the dissimilatory reduction of Fe(III)-oxyhydroxide at the microbe-mineral interface: the application of STXM-XMCD.
This paper uses a technique that combines microscopy, spectroscopy and magnetic characterisation, and applies it to a new area of research. We explored in detail how iron reducing bacteria were able to convert what is effectively a waste product (iron oxyhydroxide) to technologically important magnetite nanoparticles. The paper has already attracted considerable interest in the microbiology field. Further, this work provided a methodological basis for our recent studies that use similar techniques to probe iron biomineralistion related to Alzheimer’s disease, and has been developed into a PhD project at Keele, sponsored by the UK synchrotron Diamond Light Source.
