• An extensive sifting and selection from the entire corpus of Dickens’s work including 15 novels, 3 short story collections, 2 collections of essays, 4 volumes of collected non-fiction articles,12 volumes of letters, thousands of weekly periodical issues from 1850-1870

• Significant primary research into the developing scientific discourses of race over a range of 100+ years from Blumenbach through Russell Wallace to early eugenics

• A thorough engagement with the vast body of racial and postcolonial theories

• Considerable archival work examining 19th-century ethnological and anthropological writing
