Assessment of Wake-Tail Interference Effects on the Dynamics of Flexible Aircraft
This research pioneered the medium-fidelity modelling of flexible aircraft, presenting a unified description that includes nonlinear structural dynamics, flight mechanics and three-dimensional unsteady aerodynamics. As an example of a novel capability of this approach, the effect of 3D unsteady aerodynamic interference is investigated in the flight dynamics of a flexible vehicle. A new computational framework was developed, designated as SHARP, which has been and is currently being used in numerous research projects at Imperial College London, including long-endurance aircraft, flapping micro-aerial vehicles and offshore wind turbines.
