JMHE-2: This paper addresses the optimum content replication and data centre locations for reducing total worldwide CO2 emission, including topology optimization, sleep, and flexible resource allocation. It led to a (current world-record) 64-fold improvement of core network energy efficiency. This was adopted by the GreenTouch consortium of >50 academic/industrial partners (June 2013 White Paper), and is being utilized by Alcatel-Lucent/Huawei/France Telecom for future network design. It led to a 2012 visiting fellowship to BT (louise.krug@bt.com), and a collaboration with the BBC (chris.chambers@rd.bbc.co.uk) to reduce the iPlayer carbon footprint, through video caching, optimum content distribution, and energy efficient peer-to-peer content sharing.
