AGD-4: This is the first demonstration of absorption-sensitive reflection imaging using a terahertz quantum cascade laser (QCL), providing a practical QCL imaging/spectroscopy methodology that avoids the need for a transmission geometry or for precise (specular) alignment of source/detector. Rigorous back-scattering models were compared, and used, to extract absorption coefficients of concealed powdered samples. The work was supported by Her Majesty’s Government Communication Centre (including funding Dean as a PDRA), for application to sense concealed drugs-of-abuse, and underpinned a subsequent £428k contract from the Home Office Scientific Development Branch (2009–2012), and a 2013 US DTRA award (HDTRA1-14-C-0013, PI:Linfield, $255,671).
