Additional information

This paper, supported through a Royal Academy visiting fellowship, represents the culmination of research, sponsored by Network Rail, into fatigue assessment of riveted bridges, commonly found in the UK and other countries with an ageing railway infrastructure. It brings together research into the derivation of probabilistic load spectra, the definition of appropriate fatigue limit states and damage scenarios, as well as concepts from system reliability theory. It presents a wide range of results which can be of value to infrastructure owners and their maintaining agents and offers insights into the risks from fatigue degradation and failure of critical bridge components.
