Additional information

Very little is known about the long-term dynamic behaviour of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines in clays. Experimental methods have been developed to study the long term behaviour. This paper presents laboratory tests in which changes of frequency and damping of a scaled turbine were monitored. The results are presented using a non-dimensional framework based on an interpretation of the governing mechanics. Practical guidance for choosing the diameter of monopile is suggested based on element test results of the soil. This work is currently being used in Industry (Atkins: Michael Harte (Michael.Harte@atkinsglobal.com), KBR Ricardo Argiolas [ricardo.argiolas@kbr.com].
